Tabling a New Motion

Copyright ITSF 2010

In my search for a sports fix the other night I stumbled upon the Table Football World Cup on EuroSport2. Initially, I found it somewhat comical to see the fanfare surrounding the game which enjoyed a supporting role on Friends for 10 years.

Unfortunately, after a few minutes my amusement turned to annoyance when the popularity of the event actually sunk in. Televised coverage, sponsors and a packed venue – wow.

I’m curious - what do we need to do in the UK to get more people behind certain sports here, which are respected and in some cases, revered in other countries?

  1. For your info, table football is respected and revered on the other side of the channel. I always sucked at it but I've seen true masters in many local bar/pub. You have to recognise they know how to advertise it and appeal to younger generation.... First of all the training ground is a pub (always look cool when you a school boy) . Secondly it does not involve too much movement or running, seats are close by and a wide choice of refreshment are next to the side line. Finally you can train even when drunk without to much risk for your health (apart for the liver). In conclusion I'm not surprise they have so much fan base.
